The iconic Kilta chair was designed in 1955 by the Finnish interior architect Olli Mannermaa for Martele (known at the time as Tehokaluste). The German furniture manufacturer Eugen Schmidt (famous for the brand ES Mobel) later produced this renowned chair under license in Germany for the European market, much as Cassina did in Italy. It was the very first Finnish chair with the seat shell molded entirely from a single piece of polystyrene (expanded plastic). The chair was produced as a comfortable lounge armchair, dining chair, and executive chair. This made the chair extremely lightweight, easy to handle, and organic in shape. It has been included in the permanent Design Collection of the MoMA in New York. Design: Olli Mannermaa. Manufacturer: Eugen Schmidt / ES Mobel. Period: 1960s. Country: Germany. Model: Kilta.
