Important Montbéliard Cabinet of the 18th Century
Superb and imposing Montbéliard cabinet from the 18th century, originating from the Montbéliard region in Franche-Comté. This remarkable regional piece features particularly elegant architecture, characteristic of Montbéliard cabinetmaking tradition, combining diamond-point panels, floral carvings, and geometric marquetry decoration. It opens at the front with four heavily molded panel doors, arranged on two levels, separated by a belt containing two drawers. The uprights are richly carved with stylized plant motifs, flowers, foliage, and finely executed decorative compositions. The upper cornice, widely overhanging and molded, is highlighted by a beautiful frieze of marquetry with oblique geometric patterns, alternating light and dark woods. The central uprights also feature light wood panels with contrasting grains, adding an extra decorative touch to the whole. The four doors are adorned with long, ornate metal lock entries, while the two belt drawers have their own decorative fittings. The sides, more understated, are equipped with iron transport handles. The interior, fully fitted with storage spaces, features wooden board backs and shelves. The drawers reveal interesting dovetail joinery work, showcasing the traditional craftsmanship of cabinetmakers. The whole rests on ball feet and retains a beautiful patina with warm tones, highlighting the wood grains and the richness of the carvings.
