This romantic folio lithograph is taken from David Roberts's "Picturesque Sketches of Spain." The book was published in London in 1837 by Hodgson & Graves. The lithographs were printed at C. Hullmandel's lithography workshop by Shotter Boys, Allom, Gauci, L. Haghe, Cooper, and Roberts himself. Originally hand-colored, the lithographs are based on Roberts's original sketches. David Roberts (1796–1864) was an exceptionally talented Scottish artist. He began his apprenticeship as a painter at the age of 10, starting as a house painter before devoting himself to more decorative work and the creation of frescoes. He is best known for his celebrated work *Views of the Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia*, but the work presented here is another striking example of his artistic talent. David Roberts traveled to Spain between 1832 and 1833. He made over 200 sketches of people and places. Twenty-six of these were lithographed for the book *Picturesque Sketches of Spain*. Dimensions: 52 X 40 cm (interior) 1837. The work is in good to excellent overall condition. There is some very light foxing. Some minor imperfections, due to age, are possible.
