Cabinet of an ancient Chinese scholar in lacquered wood, originating from northern China, early 20th century. This piece of furniture was intended for study and intellectual living spaces, where the furnishings needed to combine functionality, sobriety, and balance. Compact and harmoniously proportioned, it rests on a slightly elevated base that provides stability and architectural presence. The front features two solid doors with framed panels, highlighted by wrought iron fittings: visible hinges, a central plate, and pull rings, characteristic elements of traditional Chinese furniture that are both utilitarian and graphic. The old lacquer, in deep shades of brown, red, and ochre, displays a remarkable patina, shaped by time and use. The wear, chips, and variations in material tell an authentic story and give the surface an almost pictorial quality, vibrant and alive. The upper surface, intentionally understated, highlights the depth and texture of the lacquer. The interior offers an ideal storage space for books, precious objects, or decorative elements. The construction prioritises solidity, clarity of volumes, and balance of proportions, without unnecessary ornamentation.
