Antique pine sideboard with two drawers and two doors – China, circa 1930

This antique pine wood sideboard, featuring two drawers, two doors, and a washed grey patina, is a domestic piece from northern China dating to around 1930. It does not retain a manufacturer's label and is described by typology and region. Sideboards from the coastal areas of northern China, bordering the Bohai Sea, share their structure with inland furniture but often exhibit more washed finishes, characteristic of the saline climate and regional domestic use. The combination of high drawers and low doors was suitable for storing bedding, crockery, or small provisions. The frame is assembled using blind mortise and tenon joints. The two high drawers retain their original circular wrought iron rings, and the two low doors pivot on wooden axes, closing with matching entries and rings. A cut apron raises the body a few centimetres above the ground. The patina displays the characteristic pearl-grey tone of pine washed by time in coastal interiors, with deep grain and slight traces of dark pigment in the grooves. The wear is consistent: softened edges, light rubbing on the front, and stable oxidation on the fittings. It functions as a living room sideboard, a low unit for a television, or a storage piece in a master bedroom. Its washed tone and tranquil silhouette integrate naturally into wabi-sabi, japandi, or coastal-rustic interiors, adding character without dominating the room. Details.
