Very nice vase in perfect condition by boch freres keramis (bfk) model d: 787. Neck and base left white, connected by five black vertical stripes alternating with green stripes. The black bands are decorated at the level of the rumen, with three stylized and superimposed flowers. A wavy stem with stylized buds in the hollows rises from the flowers to the neck and to the base. Charles catteau was born in douai, france, in 1880. He began working as a decorator at the manufacture nationale de sèvres in 1902 and, in 1903, he graduated from the école nationale de céramique de sèvres. His first job after graduation was at the königliche porzellan-manufaktur in nymphenburg, near munich. His talent was quickly noticed by one of the most important ceramic producers in belgium. In 1906, catteau moved to la louvière, belgium, to work as a draftsman for boch frères keramis. In 1907, catteau was appointed head of the decoration department of boch frères, which would later be known as the atelier de fantaisie. In the 1920s, collectors could identify geometric treatments, with recurring patterns of floral bands and medallions. Catteau uses increasingly vivid colors, which produces striking contrasts. In the mid-1920s, catteau began covering his vases with wallpaper-like patterns, densely decorating the entire shape. Catteau is constantly experimenting with different styles, compositions and materials. He eventually changed the composition of the enamels he used, creating pieces that resembled glassware or sculptures with dazzling glazes.
