The Prague chair, also known as chair no. 811, was designed in the 1920s by Austrian architect/designer Josef Hoffmann for Thonet. The chair was popular in the 1930s and again in the 1950s/60s, especially among architects. According to Thonet, chair no. 811 was only produced by Thonet in the 1930s and 1950s. (Today, the chair is available new, but not with the hand-woven rattan seat and backrest like the 1930s and 1950s versions). This 1950s version features 'block legs' (as opposed to the later round legs). The rattan webbing of the seat and backrest is in good, tight condition. Sturdy chair. Small holes in the wood of the seat indicate that it was once upholstered (as often happened with these chairs). Comfortable to sit on and also suitable as a desk chair. Signs of use consistent with age. The chair has a (remnant of a) paper Thonet label and a THONET stamp in the wood. Made in former Czechoslovakia.
