Philippe Starck (Born in 1949) For Alessi Hot Bertaa Kettle Model Made of aluminum and green plastic 1980s design (1987) Height: 25.5cm Length: 32cm Wear on the aluminum, scratches (see photos) *Born in 1949 in Paris, designer Philippe Starck is often described as a provocateur, a defender of democratic design, but also as “the superstar of French design.” It is said that as a child, Philippe Starck slept under the drawing table of his father, an inventor and aeronautical engineer. He studied at the Ecole Camondo in Paris, but it would later be reported that he “learned nothing” there and that he let himself be guided by his own curiosity. Around 1968, Philippe Starck founded his own studio in Paris and specialized in inflatable designs. He collaborated with the master of inflatable furniture, designer Quasar Khanh. The following year, he debuted an inflatable structure at the Salon de l'Enfant (Children's Fair) and caught the attention of fashion designer Pierre Cardin, who offered him a position as artistic director. In the mid- to late 1970s, Philippe Starck designed nightclubs such as La Main Bleue in Montreuil and Les Bains Douches in Paris. As the 1980s approached, he founded a company called Starck Product, which would later be renamed Ubik after the Philip K. Dick novel. He began producing furniture, lighting, and accessories for manufacturers such as Alessi, Driade, Flos, Kartell, and Vitra. In 1983, Philippe Starck became internationally known after he was invited by President François Mitterrand to renovate the private apartments of the Élysée Palace. Soon after, he received regular commissions to design the interiors of restaurants and hotels, such as the Café Costes in Paris (1984), Manin in Tokyo (1985), Theatron in Mexico City (1985), the Royalton (1988) and Paramount (1990) in New York City, as well as the Delano Hotel in Miami Beach (1995).
