Chinese low cabinet in stripped wood – China, Qing dynasty – circa 1900

Low and elongated stripped wood furniture, of Chinese origin and traditional craftsmanship, situated halfway between a console bench and a horizontal auxiliary piece, representative of popular furniture from northern China reinterpreted for contemporary use. The piece originates from a functional type of traditional Chinese furniture: the low and narrow unit placed against the wall to support everyday objects or, in homes with a kang, to serve as an extended shelf. Its very elongated proportion and minimal height make it an ideal TV unit for large wall-mounted screens, or a console bench that structures a wall without imposing height. It is constructed from locally used wood, with a façade divided into two sections closed by side doors, a central open space, and a set of three small drawers at the bottom. The doors and drawers feature forged iron ring handles on circular plates, consistent with the Qing hardware repertoire.
