Pair of Bronze Chenets in Neoclassical Style in the Form of an Oil Lamp

This pair of bronze andirons in the neoclassical style draws its formal vocabulary from one of the most enduring motifs of the neoclassical period: the antique oil lamp or cassolette. Each standard is cast in the image of a classical oil lamp — a wide, shallow bowl with generous proportions, resting on a moulded circular base, from which rises a tall, slender neck topped with an open ring. The ring finial, a motif closely associated with the design of the English Regency period and its French Empire counterpart, lends the piece both architectural clarity and a delicacy of silhouette. The log bars, made of simple iron, extend horizontally from the base of each standard with characteristic simplicity. The casting is of good quality, with the classical forms rendered with appropriate weight and softness. The polished gilt bronze finish gives the whole a warm and aristocratic character in keeping with its period sources: the antique oil lamp was a central motif of neoclassical design since Robert Adam in England and Percier and Fontaine in France had made it a decorative vocabulary at the end of the 18th century. Dating from around 1960, this pair reflects the sustained interest in neoclassical aesthetics that characterised high-quality British decorative ironwork in the mid-20th century, when Regency period forms experienced a revival of prestige in residential interiors and country houses.
