Set of 6 fruit (or dessert) plates from the "Astrakan" series created by Lisa Larson for the Gustavsberg factory. Sweden, 1960. These pieces are made of white stoneware, covered with a gray/taupe glaze. Note: The Astrakan series is generally in blue-green color. The plates are not stamped on the back, but the model is very recognizable. These plates may be a precursor to production. The plates are adorned with a raised apple motif. The name "Astrakhan" comes from a variety of apples originating from Russia. These plates are rare since the series was only produced between 1959 and 1960. The shape is oblong. Dimensions: approximately 20 cm X 18 cm X H. 2.5 to about 3 cm (depending on the side) Very good vintage condition, with a manufacturing defect on the edge of one plate and a micro chip underneath another. A few micro scratches from use. Please carefully look at the photos which are part of the description. *** Lisa Larson: She was born in 1931 in the Härlunda district of Älmhult, the birthplace of IKEA. She studied at the School of Arts and Design in Gothenburg from 1949 to 1954. She is best known for her ceramic works depicting animals and characters. After her studies, she participated in a Scandinavian art competition where she was approached by Stig Lindberg, who offered her a one-year trial position at the Gustavsberg porcelain factory. Lisa Larson eventually left Gustavsberg in 1980 to work as a freelancer for several Swedish companies, including Duka, Kooperativa Förbundet, and Åhléns. In 1992, Larson founded the Gustavsberg Ceramic Studio with some of her former colleagues. The studio continues to create new models and is still the site of small-scale production.
