Traditional Armchair Folk Style in Oak 1930s

J. R. Hoogezand Traditional Vernacular Armchair in Oak, Netherlands, 1930s. This is a high-quality traditional French or provincial armchair with some modern accents, made by the Dutch cabinetmaker J.R. Hoogezand (1885-1966). Although it resembles an old farmhouse chair from the 18th or 19th century, it is actually a piece from the 1930s. It is beautifully crafted from solid oak. It features lovely small details such as curved armrests, wide legs, and carved details at the top of the backrest. Overall, it is an excellent adaptation of a widely used old farmhouse armchair from the 1930s and the early modern period. In the Dutch city of Utrecht, at Oud Kerkhof 25, is the company J.R. Hoogezand, which opened its doors on 8 February 1930 and initially offered stores for complete furnishings. The company specialised in selling both smaller and larger furniture and also operated as a cabinetmaker and upholsterer for apartments and furniture. They were a high-end workshop known for interior decoration and craftsmanship. We can date this armchair to the 1930s as the company's name is indicated on the label underneath. Later, it changed its name to J.R. Hoogezand v/h B. Middelbeek Meubileering and J.R. Hoogezand Ateliers voor Binnenhuiskunst. The chair is in very good condition with slight signs of age and use.
