Oil painting on canvas - Adolphe Appian, farmyard, Lyon school, 19th century. Oil painting on canvas, mounted on a cardboard panel. Figurative representation of a farmyard. Rural scene centred on a building with a light façade, featuring open shutters and a thick covering, presumably a thatched roof. On the right side of the composition, a peasant is seated against the wall, with crossed legs. An accumulation of logs, bundles, and wooden planks occupies the left half of the pictorial space. The colour palette is dominated by earthy tones and deep browns, contrasting with the luminous treatment of the sky and the wall of the house. Textured and spontaneous brushwork, characteristic of plein air painting from the second half of the 19th century. Signed at the bottom left. A brass plaque mounted on the lower crossbar of the frame, engraved with the inscription "APPIAN A. Cour de Ferme". Very good condition of the pictorial layer and the mounted support. On the reverse, the mounting cardboard covered with blue paper, featuring an old printed framer's label in the centre: "50, Rue Saint-Lazare. VVE BILLIET framing of all kinds. Paris." Mounted in a period gilded wooden frame with a groove profile and overlapping mouldings. Signs of wear on the gilding. Visible loss of material on the lower moulding, just below the brass plaque. Measurements: • Dimensions visible: 33 X 24 cm. • Dimensions with frame: 46 X 37 cm. Adolphe Appian (Jacques Barthélemy Appian, 1818-1898) was a French painter, engraver, and draughtsman of the Lyon school. Trained at the École des beaux-arts in Lyon, he initially began with drawing for silk fabrics before fully dedicating himself to landscape painting. His encounter with Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny in 1852 permanently directed his work towards a sensitivity akin to the Barbizon school. Appian regularly exhibited.
