Set of 4 vintage cups and saucers in white earthenware adorned with berries and wheat grass, with a blue-grey rim. Each saucer is stamped Hedgegrow – Alfred Meakin – England underneath. In the 18th century, the best pottery in the world was made in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. With all the necessary resources to support the factories, northern Staffordshire became a center for ceramic production in the early 17th century. The area was rich in clay, coal to fuel the kilns and machines. Alfred Meakin Ltd was established in 1875 by Alfred Meakin. The pottery is affiliated with a large British pottery company J. & G. Meakin in Hanley, run by his brothers James and George Meakin, known for its large quantity of porcelain and cheap ironstone produced for the British market. A beautiful set for fans of English tea time! Overall good condition, one handle has been re-glued on one of the cups.
