Fruit knife stand, Art Nouveau, silver-plated brass, Fraget, Poland, 19th century

A figural fruit knife stand made of silver-plated brass, created by the Warsaw company Fraget in the second half of the 19th century. Its form draws from eclectic historicism – a dynamically modelled silhouette of a dragon or sea creature features a distinctive head with modelled whiskers, muscular paws, scales, and a curled tail. The upper part resembles a fan-shaped, openwork shell with organic holes for knives, while the lower part – supported on two paws and the tail – is richly textured with ribs and grooves. The cool, silvery-grey colour with a uniform patina and carefully finished details highlight the craftsmanship and high quality of the material. The construction is uniform, with no visible joints, and the whole piece rests stably on three points. Condition is described as good: subtle signs of ageing, patina, and light wear are visible, with no damage or repairs. This item carries the spirit of 19th-century Warsaw – a time when Fraget products symbolised prestige and the ceremonial nature of daily life. The fanciful dragon silhouette, full of flowing lines and expressive details, evokes images of salon gatherings where table settings were as important as the ritual of serving fruit. Silvery reflections on the scales and paws seem to bring the form to life, as if the dragon hovers between fantasy and reality, bringing with it a breath of Orientalism, naturalism, and the emerging Art Nouveau.
