This pair of gilded bronze wall sconces embodies everything that the Louis XVI style has nobly contributed to the art of lighting: elegance, moderation, and a taste for the Antique. Made around 1900-1930 in the spirit of the great Parisian bronze craftsmen, such as Bagués and Charles & Cie, they faithfully adopt the neoclassical vocabulary of the 18th century, without an apparent signature but with a quality of casting and chiseling that reveals true workshop craftsmanship. Each sconce rises in height around a tapered shaft shaped like a pilaster, with a finely textured central panel that contrasts with the shiny parts of the bronze. It is crowned with an acanthus leaf ornament and rests on a curved base adorned with palmettes and foliage intricately carved with great precision. It concludes with a pine cone motif, a prestigious design cherished in French tradition, giving the whole piece its torch-like silhouette. The unique arm, in a scroll design, gracefully extends to hold a cup with a bobeche edged with pearls, a very Louis XVI detail, the underside of which is decorated with an acanthus rosette. The cream-colored faux candles, with faux drips patinated, perfectly match the warm hue of the bronze and extend the illusion of flame lighting. The gilded patina, sometimes matte, sometimes vibrant, softly catches the light.
