ADOLPHE DETEIX (Amplepuis, 1892-1967) Woman Sewing in the Woods. Circa 1930. Oil on cardboard. 34.5 x 26 cm. Signed lower left: A. DETEIX Some wear on the corners. Adolphe Deteix is, in my opinion, the best Lyon painter of the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Amplepuis, in the Loire region, 70 km north of Lyon, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, then at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Based in Paris, he always maintained a strong connection with the Lyon region. Deteix painted flowers, fruit, nudes, landscapes, urban and religious scenes, and he could also work on a large scale, notably creating cycles of frescoes for churches. His works are featured in numerous museums, churches, and town halls. He was a meticulous and thoughtful painter, sometimes deliberately naive, with his own distinct palette (mauve is a favorite color, as seen in this intimate scene of a woman sewing), and a subtle, lively brushstroke.
