Regency walnut commode with Chinese handles, 18th century.

Walnut commode, Regency period (circa 1725-1735). French provincial work. Imposing solid walnut commode featuring a curved front with three wide moulded drawers, separated by visible crosspieces. The straight and rounded uprights are decorated with vertical fluting extending down to the feet, giving the whole piece an elegant balance between architectural strength and ornamental refinement. It rests on a low belt with finely cut, undulating apron. The single-piece walnut top, highlighted by a slight corbin beak, crowns the piece and showcases beautiful craftsmanship from a regional workshop, likely from the South-West or Dauphiné. The lock entries and bronze pull handles, adorned with facing Chinese figures, illustrate the taste for "Chinese" exoticism characteristic of the Regency period. There is some wear to the gilding. The dovetail joints, visible on the sides of the drawers, confirm period construction. There has been old restoration to the frame and top, with the back redone at a later time.
