Superb "charger" shaped ceramic plate from the famous Cloutier brothers, Jean and Robert, dating from the 1960s. This significant piece, measuring 29 cm in diameter, is made of red clay and features their signature relief decoration: a still life with stylised fruits (apples, pears, grapes) created with very glossy glazes in purple, pink, and earthy tones. The contrast between the thick glaze and the raw clay on the reverse reflects the unique modernist aesthetic of the Cloutier workshop. Trained by master ceramists such as Georges Jouve and Pol Chambost, the Cloutier brothers are among the great names in 20th-century ceramics from Vallauris and Paris. This plate would fit perfectly on a sideboard or mounted on a wall. Origin: France. Period: 1960s. Materials: Red terracotta and glaze. Dimensions: Diameter 29 cm|Height 3.5 cm. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The glaze is very fresh and bright. No major chips or cracks. Note a tiny "glaze skip" (pinhead/fleabite) on the edge of the profile (see last photo), which is quite typical for these period red clays and has no aesthetic impact. Signed "Cloutier" on the reverse.
