Vulkany vase, mid-century modern, olive soda glass, designed by J.S. Drost, Poland, 1970s

The vase designed by Jan Sylwester Drost is an example of Polish utility glass from the 1970s, made at HSG Ząbkowice from pressed soda glass. The cylindrical form subtly narrows towards the base, and the whole is kept in a very light olive or almost colourless shade, depending on the light. The matte surface of the vase is covered with a distinct geometric relief – a regular arrangement of raised squares and rectangles creating a three-dimensional structure. This pattern is not only decorative but also diffuses light, enhancing the modern character of the form. The glass has no additional colour accents; the entire effect is based on its structure and subtle light refractions. The vase is in very good condition; the surface is free from cracks, chips, and signs of intervention. This design, typical of Polish modernism of the 1970s, refers to the spirit of the era, which emphasised functionalism and material boldness. The glass borrows the visual language of architecture: its surface, like an urban grid, speaks of order and the search for clear solutions. The vase itself seems to whisper the belief that the simplest form and focus on texture can become the most expressive manifesto of utilitarian decorativeness, while remaining an everyday object. It is a good idea to display the vase on a low sideboard or in an interior kept in the spirit of mid-century modern, where it will harmoniously combine with both matte and glossy surfaces. It is worth combining it with glass or ceramic accents of simple, geometric shapes or subdued greenery. It will work perfectly as a soloist against darker walls, as well as in a duet with other relief-structured vessels; it will also fit into minimalist collector arrangements, emphasising a love of form and material.
