In 1953, he hired Polish refugee Marian Zawadzki, who began experimenting with the sgraffito technique. This created a unique texture that became a style associated with Tilgmans Keramik. In the 1960s, production moved toward a darker, rustic style, and in 1971 he moved production to Londonderry, Ireland. Harry Tillman died in Helsinki, Finland in 1974, and soon after the factory closed.
