Faceted submerged vase, grey-blue Murano glass – dlg Flavio Poli

Murano glass vase, blown and cut with facets, colourless and grey-blue sommerso technique. Italian craftsmanship in the spirit of Flavio Poli, H. 21 cm. The sommerso – literally "submerged" – refers to a blown glass technique developed in Murano in the 1950s, of which Flavio Poli, then artistic director of the Seguso Vetri d’Arte glassworks, is one of the main artisans: a bubble of coloured glass is enveloped in successive layers of colourless glass, creating an optical depth effect where the hue appears to float at the heart of the material. This process earned Poli the Compasso d’Oro in 1954 and recognition that quickly surpassed the Seguso workshop, spreading to other Murano houses – Mandruzzato, Campanella, V. Nason… who adopted the principle throughout the 1960s and 1970s, often associated with cold-cut facets. This vase falls within this vein. The vintage condition is very satisfactory: the piece retains the integrity of its cutting and the sharpness of its edges, with slight signs of use consistent with its age, with no chips or cracks noted.
