Pair of wall sconces designed by Holger Johansson. Elegant pair of wall sconces by Holger Johansson, designed and produced in the 1960s by Westal. The lamps consist of a brass structure and a lovely glass globe. Overall good condition. Dimensions: Height: 42 cm / Diameter: 18 cm. About the designer: Holger Johansson was active in Sweden in the mid-20th century and is primarily associated with lighting and metalwork, fully embracing the tradition of Nordic modernism. Trained as a metal craftsman, he worked at a time when Swedish design was evolving from decorative classicism to functional and socially engaged modernism. Johansson's work generally emphasises clarity of form, honesty of materials, and measured proportions, in line with the ideals promoted by Swedish design institutions and exhibitions from the 1940s to the 1960s. His lamps and metal objects tend to be practical and durable rather than expressive or sculptural, reflecting the importance placed in Sweden on everyday utility rather than a heroic artistic approach.
