With his stay in Paris in the early 1960s, his style evolved towards a more spontaneous and dynamic approach, which he later developed in London and finally within the Berlin movement Neue Wilde in the early 1980s. Keil often used intense, garish colours and eschewed realism. The colour in his paintings is applied with quick brush strokes and sometimes in impasto, and the patterns in his works are often altered by graffiti elements.
