Brown Camel Leather and Fluted Brass Desk Lamp, in the Style of Jac

This desk lamp illustrates the rigorous aesthetic of French luxury leatherwork from the mid-20th century. The structural design rests on a weighted square base, fully covered in smooth camel brown leather, rigorously highlighted on its edges with contrasting saddle stitching. The centre of the base features a cylindrical shaft made of solid brass, profiled with fine fluting. The whole is crowned by its short drum-shaped lampshade, also covered in matching stitched leather. The interior of the shade is lined with a reflective gold finish, technically designed to optimise and warm the diffusion of light downwards. The combination of the geometric rigor of brass and the saddle treatment of leather (particularly in this iconic camel shade of high-end leather goods) formally places this piece in the wake of Jacques Adnet's creations. Director of the Compagnie des Arts Français from 1928 to 1959, Adnet established himself as one of the masters of luxury modernism. He made leatherwork with saddle stitching (often in collaboration with the Hermès house) applied to metal structures his absolute signature.
