An “Argyle Chair” designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 to 1928). Produced by Cassina for the ‘Cassina I Maestri” collection. Stamped. Provenance: From the estate of MJ Long (1939 – 2018), joint architect of the British Library at St Pancras. The Argyle Chair was designed for Catherine Cranston in 1896 for the Argyle Street Tea Rooms and represented Mackintosh’s first private commission. The chairs were situated in the Luncheon rooms where their elongated, high backs were intended to make a statement whilst enclosing those dining into a more private space. The back legs of chair have square based feet which gradually taper as they rise to their circular tops on either side of an oval headrest featuring the carved out shape of a bird in flight. The Italian furniture manufacturer Cassina SPA (established in 1927) acquired the rights to Mackintosh’s designs in 1972. W: 48cm, D: 45.5cm, H: 137cm, seat height 44cm.
