Walnut cabinet, Italy, early 20th century

This filing cabinet comes from the British consulate and dates back to the early 20th century. In the 1920s, the British Consulate in Naples was responsible for issuing visas and passports, an essential function during a time marked by significant post-war migrations and the initial immigration restrictions imposed by the British government. It is made of solid walnut, with drawer fronts veneered in solid walnut approximately 5 mm thick. The piece consists of four vertical columns, each equipped with four large drawers featuring an internal mechanism made of wood and metal designed to keep documents perfectly organised. Each drawer is fitted with shell handles and brushed brass nameplates, characteristic of office furniture from the first half of the 20th century. Partially restored, this filing cabinet is in excellent condition. The two end modules have side panels, while the two central modules do not.
