Art Nouveau shelf unit in solid wood from the 20th century.

Square pedestal or plant stand in Art Nouveau style or inspired by the Belle Époque, dating from the early 20th century (circa 1900-1920). It is designed to elevate a piece of art (a sculpture, a vase) or a decorative green plant. It features a double top (a square upper top and a low square stretcher to stabilise the structure and provide additional storage space). It rests on four long, tapered legs that are slightly curved outward. The belt under the upper top is adorned with a sculpted frieze in bas-relief depicting floral patterns and foliage typical of the naturalistic repertoire of the time. On the upper top, a butterfly wing or diamond point marquetry is visible. The wood grain is arranged in a geometric and symmetrical pattern, converging towards the centre of the square. This is a detail of fine carpentry commonly used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to enhance support furniture. The varnish has a lovely slightly shiny period patina.
