We are pleased to offer for sale this very large, restored and highly collectible Victorian bookcase, dating from around 1860-1880, made of pine and oak, based on the original design by Samuel Pepys from 1666, forming part of a large suite. This bookcase is an example of exquisite craftsmanship, with each piece of wood having been hand-cut by a master craftsman. This piece has been restored with a deep clean, hand-applied conditioning wax, and hand polishing. Signs of age and use such as patina marks are present, as expected for a piece of this age. The shelves and glass appear to be original. New keys will be provided before shipping, which should work with all the locks. The dimensions are: height 287 cm, width 223.5 cm, depth 51 cm. This bookcase is part of a style designed in 1666 by Samuel Pepys, considered the cradle of the independent library as we know it today. The originals can be found in the Samuel Pepys Library at Magdalene College, University of Oxford, and at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The piece is of English origin, from the mid-19th century, finely handcrafted, using materials of pine, oak, and glass.
