Gateleg drop-leaf dining table in solid oak, woven, from the 18th century. Double drop-leaf centre table, known as a "Gateleg" model. Oval top, nearly circular in proportion when open. Can be transformed into a console or wall serving table once both leaves are lowered along the base. Entirely made of solid oak. The top consists of wide planks joined together, featuring a quarter-sawn cut characterised by very prominent grain (visible medullary rays). The structure is assembled with visible tenons, mortises, and wooden dowels. Rustic cabinetmaking work, of English origin, dating from the 18th century. The base is composed of turned baluster legs, accented with rings and spheres. Four fixed legs form the main structure, connected by a rectangular-section peripheral stretcher. Two hinged legs serve as a support barrier (gateleg mechanism) for holding the drop leaves. The apron is adorned with an architecturally cut and shaped design at both ends. Condition is satisfactory. The piece is heavy, stable, and structurally sound. The opening and closing mechanism of the leaves is smooth. Signs of usage restorations are visible on the underside, including the addition of reinforcement blocks and the later replacement of metal hinges. Signs of wear, an old patina, small wood chips on the edges, and slight natural shrinkage cracks inherent to the age of the material. Measurements: • Total length (open): 175 cm. • Total width (open): 148 cm. • Height: 74 cm. • Depth (closed in serving position): 55 cm.
