C1699 “ stijlrelief” wall lamp by willem van oyen for raak amsterdam, the netherlands, 1960s. This extraordinary wall lamp is one of the most artistic and experimental designs produced by raak amsterdam. Designed by willem van oyen, the “ stijlrelief” combines lighting with glass art, resulting in a sculptural object that transforms both daylight and artificial light into a vibrant visual experience. The front consists of thick cast glass panels arranged in a relief-like composition. Suspended within the glass are countless coloured inclusions and bubbles in vivid shades of red, blue, black, and amber. When illuminated, the glass comes alive, revealing a fascinating depth of colour and texture that changes depending on the viewing angle. The bronze-coloured metal housing provides a beautiful contrast to the expressive glass elements and emphasises the architectural character of the design. This example remains in good vintage condition with a partial raak amsterdam label still visible. Two corners of the glass show some wear, as well as some corrosion marks and areas of paint loss to the metal wall mount, all consistent with its age and history. These signs of wear do not detract from the overall visual impact of the piece and only add to its authenticity. Rarely encountered today, the c1699 “ stijlrelief” is both a functional light source and a work of dutch glass art, representing one of the most distinctive and collectible designs produced by raak amsterdam during the 1960s.
