Game table, mahogany, Directoire, around 1800 – France

Elegant and timeless mahogany gaming table in the shape of a half-moon from the Directoire period, late 18th century. It rests on pilaster legs topped with wooden pads. It features a refined and classic top with a green felt cushion. Its curved profile, faceted legs, and discreet drawer reflect the neoclassical aesthetic characteristic of late 18th and early 19th-century design. Its balanced proportions and understated details make it an ideal choice as a desk, console, side table, or gaming table, suitable for both classic and contemporary interiors. It has barely any ornamental details, as the beauty of the piece lies in the wood itself, with warm tones and pronounced grains. This revival of classicist taste was latent in painting, furniture, and fashion, particularly in women's clothing. During this time, France experienced significant political and social changes, which were reflected in furniture with a more rational and functional approach. Symmetry in drawer design and the balanced proportion of the piece as a whole are key characteristics of classic furniture from these periods.
