A substantial dining table designed by Jean Batenburg for MI, Belgium, circa 1969. Executed in dark-stained oak, the table is characterised by Batenburg’s strong architectural approach, with a restrained rectangular frame, broad end sections and a long low stretcher connecting the legs. The richly figured oak grain remains visible through the deep finish, creating a warm contrast with the almost black surface. Four discreet drawers are integrated beneath the tabletop, two on either side, allowing the table to be approached and used from both sides. Traditional dovetail construction can be seen in the drawers, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship throughout. The table has retained a particularly attractive original patina, with natural wear along the edges revealing the warmer oak underneath and emphasising its construction. A strong example of Belgian modernist furniture of the late 1960s, combining functional design with the robust, geometric character associated with Batenburg’s work for MI. Dxhxl: 75x75x210 cm. The dark finish shows rubbing and loss on edges and corners, revealing the oak underneath. The tabletop has surface scratches, small marks and minor dents, adding to its original patina and character. Part of a complete Jean Batenburg dining room suite, including matching chairs, sideboard and bar cabinet, which will also be available.
