School chair model "Mulka 300" by Jacques Hitier for Mullca

The "Mullca 300" school chair, designed in France by designer Jacques Hitier and produced by Mullca from 1949, is fully in line with the context of reconstruction and modernisation of school infrastructure in the post-war period. In response to the need to furnish French classrooms massively, solidly, and at low cost, manufacturers turned to industrial innovations combining tubular metal and plywood. Valued for its robustness and ergonomics suited to children, it has been the subject of numerous reissues. The chair consists of a sturdy base made of yellow lacquered bent steel tubing, forming stable and slightly inclined legs that ensure stackability. It features a square seat with rounded corners made of slightly curved thermoformed plywood to optimise the child's comfort. The whole is completed by a rectangular backrest made of shaped plywood, fixed to the tubular structure with visible, durable rivets. The object combines lacquered steel tubing, here coated in yellow, but it was also produced in blue and green.
