Spencer family gilded wooden bergère bench chair

We are delighted to offer for sale 1 of 30 magnificent French gilt wood bergère banquette chairs dating from around 1900, originating from Spencer House, built for the Spencer family between 1756 and 1766 for John, the first Earl Spencer, and currently inhabited by Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer. Various pieces from the last sale of Spencer House are available, the house still belonging to the family of Lady Diana Spencer. The history of these items indicates that Lord Rothschild rented the property in the 1980s, during which time the house was restored and the pieces furnished the restored offices, meeting rooms, and state salons. This sale concerns one chair with the possibility of purchasing up to 30, so the price is per chair. All chairs bear several stamps and signatures under their base, including a crown stamp with Veagh underneath, a JMA stamp, and several other signatures, some appearing to be those of the craftsmen, while others indicate a certain Lord. The chairs are all in excellent vintage condition, the style dating back to the Regency period, and are very decorative and elegant pieces that have stood the test of time. Note that original antique items such as leather seats exhibit natural patina with creases and wear; it is recommended to apply an annual wax to prevent moisture loss. Hand-dyed leather should not be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods as it may dry out and discolour.
