Head of the Athena of Poitiers. Circa 1960. Plaster. H. 33 cm (with base 48 cm) The finish of the wooden base has scratches. The Athena (or Minerva) of Poitiers is a marble statue in archaic style, dating from the 5th to 4th century BC, discovered in Poitiers in 1901, and currently housed in the Sainte-Croix Museum of Poitiers. The Louvre holds a plaster cast of the original, and it is believed that the Louvre's casting workshop marketed reproductions of the entire statue as well as the head (like the one here) until the mid-20th century.
