Postmodern Italian Opaline Murano Art Glass Chalice, Abstract Polychrome Decoration, 1980s. Strikingly beautiful in the hand, this sculptural Italian art glass vessel is an elegant example of Postmodern Murano glass, combining a luminous opaline body with irregular fragments of colored glass in red, blue, yellow, pink, and violet. The colors have a soft, slightly pastel quality, with a translucent, diffused character reminiscent of watercolor painting. Set against the milky opaline ground, the irregular patches and delicate gestural marks create an almost painterly composition, giving the vessel the appearance of an abstract artwork translated into glass. The decoration recalls the expressive vocabulary of Neo-Expressionism and the Italian Transavanguardia that emerged in the late 1970s and became particularly influential during the 1980s.
