Charismatic Portrait of the Composer Franz Liszt – Oil On Canvas

Period: ca. Early 20th century. This highly charismatic portrait depicts the 19th century Hungarian composer as an elderly man. This portrait was made famous by the Austrian artist h. Torggler who based his composition on that of l. Thoma, 15, who painted it in 1879. The painting is an oil painting on canvas and is unframed. This clearly has some age as can be seen from the construction of the back of the canvas and the wear on the sides. From the layer of varnish we can tell that the painting was framed at one time. The painting is unsigned. Condition: some defects to the paint layer on the sides below where a frame once stood. Dimensions: 27 cm high, 21 cm wide.
