Superb and large circular Imari porcelain plate from Japan, dating from the second half of the 19th century (Meiji period). This plate stands out for its particularly dynamic and fluid asymmetrical pictorial composition, typical of Japanese aesthetics. The decoration, entirely hand-painted, features large sinuous waves in underglaze cobalt blue, enhanced by rich work in saffron iron red, water green, and delicate touches of gold. This motif of large bicoloured spiral waves combined with clean designs (the stylised crane drawn in a single red line) reflects a bolder and modernised graphic style, characteristic of the artistic revival of the Meiji era intended for major Western world exhibitions. The central scene highlights a poetic aquatic landscape where bouquets of blooming irises rise. At the heart of this lush nature, two stylised Japanese cranes (symbols of longevity and fidelity) are depicted: one is painted in iron red in mid-flight, while the second appears in white filigree, delicately outlined in the background. The border of the plate is adorned with a refined frieze alternating exotic shells, marine scrolls, and bright solar motifs. The exterior decoration: The vegetal friezes of peonies, painted freehand in underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red, are typical of Arita production. The bluish and slightly grey colour of the glaze confirms that it is indeed made of Japanese porcelain. On the central white background, at least three to four small prominent and irregular points can be distinguished (visible under the metal attachment and around the inner rim). These are perfect spur marks. These small clay spurs were used to elevate the plate in the kiln to prevent it from collapsing under its own weight during firing. This is the absolute technical signature of Arita Japanese manufacturing. Origin: Japan (Arita / Imari Style). Era: 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912). Material: Glazed porcelain with gold highlights. Dimensions: Diameter: 47 cm. Condition: Very good overall condition for a large piece from this period.
