David Rowland, the American stacking chair
David Rowland (1924-2010) is the American designer who redefined the stacking chair. Trained under Hans Hofmann in New York and at Cranbrook Academy of Art, he signed in 1964 for General Fireproofing the 40/4 chair: a stacking chair of such fineness that forty units stack to 1.20 metres high. Awarded gold at the Milan Triennale in 1964, exhibited at MoMA, it became the world standard of the conference chair. More than eight million units sold in six decades, it is still edited today by HOWE.
The 40/4 chair remains David Rowland's signature piece, becoming one of the most produced stacking chairs of the 20th century. An American vintage chair to find for those wanting an industrial design classic, at still very accessible prices.
