Georges Pelletier, the ceramist who sculpts light

Georges Pelletier (born 1938) belongs to that generation of French ceramists who changed the status of the domestic object. Trained in Belgium, settled in the south of France, he has spent over sixty years shaping ceramics where matter converses with light. Vases, totems, sculpted lamps with cut-out shapes: each Pelletier piece tells of a precise gesture, a controlled firing, a singular glazing. A patient body of work, now a cult favourite among art ceramic lovers.

His ceramic lamps, pierced with patterns that let light filter through, have become his most identifiable signature. But his vases and totems are no less remarkable: found today in auctions and with seasoned collectors, where Pelletier prices confirm this is collectible ceramics.
