Grete Jalk, pioneer of Danish plywood

Grete Jalk (1920-2006) is one of the rare women of the great golden age of Danish design, and one of the most radical. A designer and critic, she ran the Mobilia magazine for two decades and signed for publishers Poul Jeppesen and France & Søn furniture of austere elegance. Her most iconic piece remains the GJ Easy Chair (1963), a seat sculpted from two sheets of heat-bent plywood, which strikes a pose like a manifesto of Scandinavian sketch. Exhibited at MoMA, it remains one of the most coveted Danish seats on the vintage market.

The GJ Easy Chair from Poul Jeppesen, in bent plywood, remains Grete Jalk's signature piece. A Scandinavian vintage seat to find for those wanting a rare, formally bold seat historically rooted in Danish design.
