Michel Ducaroy, designer of the Togo sofa
Michel Ducaroy (1925-2009) designed in 1973 the most copied sofa in history: the Togo. Born into a family of Lyon upholsterers, he joined Ligne Roset in 1954 and developed for thirty years seating furniture that broke with the very idea of structure. No legs, no visible frame, just pleated polyurethane foam and an enveloping fabric. The Togo, hailed from its launch at the Paris Furniture Salon, is still edited today and remains the most recognisable contemporary sofa of French design.
The Togo sofa from Ligne Roset, in original or recent edition, remains Michel Ducaroy's signature piece. Alongside the Marsala armchair and Brigantin chaise longue, it forms a family of soft seats that defined French Seventies comfort.
