René-Jean Caillette, the French Diamant chair

René-Jean Caillette (1919-2004) is one of the great signatures of French Reconstruction design. A graduate of the École Boulle, he joined the Atelier de Recherches Plastiques (ARP) in 1954 alongside Pierre Guariche, Joseph-André Motte and Michel Mortier. But his name is above all attached to one piece: the Diamant chair (1958), with its inverted triangle backrest, an icon of French modernism edited by Steiner. Chairs for Charron, tables for Sentou, and a whole furniture of great formal coherence would follow, long unrecognised.

The Diamant Steiner chair and Sentou René-Jean Caillette tables remain the designer's most iconic pieces. French vintage furniture to find for those wanting an ARP signature, at the crossroads of Guariche and Motte.
