Poul Cadovius, inventor of the modular shelving

Poul Cadovius (1911-2011) invented the shelving system as we know it today. A self-taught Danish designer, he patented in 1948 the Royal System: a modular shelving system fixed to the wall by vertical uprights, revolutionising domestic organisation. Modularity, visual lightness, the possibility of adapting each piece to its space: everything that defines modern Scandinavian design is already in this insight. More than 200,000 Royal systems would be produced before 1980.

The Royal System, in teak or rosewood, remains to this day one of the most copied Scandinavian storage systems in the world. A vintage modular shelving unit hunted today to dress an entire wall with Scandinavian rigour that doesn't go out of style.
