Maurice gourlet (1909-1995) - fisherman's house in brittany oil on canvas panel signed maurice gourlet lower left. Maurice gourlet was born in aulnoye-aymeries on march 11, 1909. He studied at the berlaimont college then at hautmont. From a young age, he worked in vallourec, where his father was a foreman. In the design office, he trained in industrial design. But it was in national education that he made his career. In 1929 he was appointed teacher in hautmont, he was then transferred to gognies-chaussée near maubeuge and mons where he lived through the difficult years of the war. In 1940, retreating to limousin with his family, he was appointed school director at la porcherie, where he discovered many landscapes. In 1942, he returned to gognies-chaussée, which he left to manage a four-class school in maroilles in 1950. In 1954, he took over the management of cateau-cambrésis where he was appointed director of the matisse school. Boys, which has just been built. In 1965, he retired and settled permanently in cateau-cambrésis until his death in 1995. Alongside his profession, maurice gourlet was passionate about painting. He is a fervent admirer of claude monet but also of eugène boudin, who are for him models for color and light. His favorite subjects are boats, fishing boats, sailboats, a constant in his work, but also trees, the chestnut trees of limousin, the poplars of the north and the olive trees of provence. He also likes the old houses of the port of saint goustan, those of riquewihr or ribeauvillé in alsace and the cateau belfry. A passion that takes him to many regions of france including brittany. He also painted numerous paintings of le cateau, his adopted city. A walking area in his homage was also inaugurated there in 1996. In excellent condition, needs dusting. I measured 59x40x5cm with its patinated frame, for a total weight of 1300 gr.
