Coffee table by Maison Charles, France 1970s

A very elegant coffee table from Maison Charles featuring 4 Chinese bronze horses "flying horses of Gansu" in the Hollywood Regency style. The flying horse of Gansu is a Chinese bronze sculpture dating back to around the 2nd century AD. Discovered in 1969 in Gansu province, it is a remarkable example of three-dimensional form and animal portraiture. Each horse rests effortlessly on a flying swallow, perfectly balanced. The heads of the horses support a large thick glass top measuring 120 X 120 cm. The tails of the horses support a smaller glass top measuring 60 X 60 cm. The corners are connected by square brass tubes. The table legs are square, black lacquered, and have a brass surface. A unique piece with an interesting history!.
