Alexandre kostanda ball vase cluny clay and stoneware height: 18.5 cm vallauris ceramics vallauris signature and stamp under the base circa 1970 biography: alexandre kostanda is a ceramist born in 1924 in poland. In 1936, he became the apprentice of louis giraud in vallauris. In 1949, he returned to vallauris to take charge of louis giraud's workshop. Alexandre kostanda founded his own workshop in 1953. He brought sandstone clay from cluny which he mixed with earth from vallauris. He can then fire his pieces at higher temperatures. At the time, vallauris ceramics worn by big names like capron, derval etc.etc. Is shimmering. Alexandre kostanda, however, retained a preference for muted colors, close to the natural tones of clay. His ceramics, rustic in appearance, surprise with the finesse of their execution and the balance of their proportions, revealing kostanda's exceptional technical mastery.
