Italian Art Deco Style Sofa in Burl Wood and Black Leather, 1980s.

An Art Deco style sofa made in Italy in the 1980s. Its greatest strength is its bold, geometric form. Wide, block-shaped sides act as both armrests and legs, creating a strong frame that holds the seat. The sides are finished in burl veneer with a richly figured, book-matched pattern full of characteristic knots and swirls, under a high-gloss lacquer. The warm honey-amber tone of the burl against the deep black leather creates a striking, elegant contrast. It is a fine example of 1980s Italian design, which favoured luxurious materials and forms inspired by Art Deco. The sofa is very comfortable. The loose seat and back cushions are upholstered in black leather with piped edges, and the deep seat offers a relaxed lounging position. The wide, flat sides can hold a book or a cup of coffee. The back is also finished in leather, so the sofa can stand in the middle of a room, not only against a wall. At 206 cm wide, it comfortably seats three and is well suited to a living room, study, library or an elegant office space. The sofa is in very good condition. It shows only minor signs of use consistent with its age: a small chip in the veneer at the bottom edge of one side and scratches on the leather upholstery visible on the photo. Seat height: 45 cm
