Two brutalist cabinets by Italian sculptor Stefano d'Amico, made of beech and ash with brass details, signed and dated 1974. Although little information is available about d'Amico's work, it is known that he exhibited in Milan and Genoa in the late 1960s. Born in Sicily, d'Amico's work, which we discovered in a publication, consistently showcases a distinctive and striking style, reflecting the craftsmanship of these particular cabinets. These pieces were custom-made for a residence in Venice. The construction of these cabinets demonstrates meticulous care and precision. Each beech cube is perfectly aligned, and the strips are individually attached to the main panel using a nail (or two) and adhesive. The resulting design offers a true visual feast for lovers of brutalist and cubist surface patterns. The seemingly random arrangement of the cubes creates a complex and captivating visual texture, evoking urban landscapes composed of large blocks of buildings and railways or rivers, without the concrete. The play of light and shadow on these cabinets is particularly striking. Under directional lighting, the city-like structure creates dynamic shadow effects, enhancing the visual impact. The colored wood effectively reflects light, producing a spectrum of lighter and darker areas, adding depth and interest to the overall composition. Several notable features enhance the appeal of these cabinets. Darker strips run vertically between lighter strips, and the base of the cabinet is entirely covered in brass. D'Amico's choice of different shades of brown contributes to the piece's aesthetic, with darker tones on the sides and top and lighter tones on the front panels. Upon opening the cabinet, a pleasant scent of fresh wood is noticeable, and the interior reveals the same high level of craftsmanship, with detailed grain patterns and well-preserved golden hinges and closing mechanisms that work perfectly even after nearly five decades. The creation of these cabinets undoubtedly required a great deal of time and effort, showcasing Stefano d'Amico's patience and dedication to his art. Dimensions. Width: 86 cm. Height: 140 cm.
